北五島 | NORTHERN GOTO ISLANDS 🇯🇵 Japan
11. - 16. June 2026

From the main Goto Island, we sailed farther north to explore some of the archipelago's most remote corners. ⛵

We anchored between fish farms and turquoise sandy beaches, hidden beneath steep green cliffs. Our folding bikes fit perfectly into the dinghy, and after carrying them over the rocky shoreline, we were ready for another day of exploring on two wheels. 🚲

One unexpected highlight on 小值賀島 / Ojika Island? A friendly local drove all the way to our anchorage with his truck and delivered a much-needed cooking gas bottle straight to our anchorage! Fellow sailors in Japan know how difficult it is to get one as a foreigner—he was our hero of the day! 🙌

A gentle breeze then carried us to 野崎島 / Nozaki Island — a place that rarely appears on the typical Japan itinerary. Even more unusual, it's one of Japan's very few uninhabited islands. We wandered through the ruins of an abandoned village, visited the magnificent church built by the Hidden Christians, and shared the island with curious deer... and, unfortunately, a few snakes. 🦌🐍

Our last stop came with an unexpected surprise: Japanese fondue. What would you expect it to taste like? 🍲

To stay safe, we had to keep sailing north and out of the danger zone. Fleeing from Typhoon Jangmi brought us to the Goto Islands—an unexpected detour that turned into one of our favorite stops.

In Goto Town, we made some unexpected connections and new friends. ❤️

Along the way, we discovered beautiful coastal roads, unique giant kites featuring samurai and monsters (a local tradition you won't find in most parts of Japan), delicious local food, and plenty more surprises.

On Naru and Hisaka, our bikes led us to hidden corners of the islands, where Japan's Hidden Christians once secretly practiced their faith and built remote churches.

Exploring the roads of the ᴋᴇʀᴀᴍᴀ ɪꜱʟᴀɴᴅ and enjoying the view over Aharen Bay with SY Yum Yum floating below ⚓

Fun fact: During World War II, the Kerama Islands became known for the “Kerama deer” — local deer that reportedly learned to swim between islands 🌊🦌
Unfortunately, we didn’t see any proof of that… neither a deer on shore nor one swimming by 🤷‍♂️

One of Okinawa’s most important shrines, perched on a huge rock above the East China Sea, with the big city of Naha in the background.

➁ 𝗦𝗵𝘂𝗿𝗶 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗲 🏯
Once the royal palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Most of the castle burned down in 2019 and is still being rebuilt, but there are still many beautiful spots around the grounds — like the 𝗦𝗵𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗚𝗮𝘁𝗲 ➂.

Traditional Okinawan guardian lions protecting homes and temples. They always come in pairs: one with an open mouth to scare away evil spirits, and one with a closed mouth to keep good fortune in. ✨

🎵 1993 - They Dream By Day

Ever had the chance to swim with a school of dolphins? 🐬

After watching them jump out of the water to keep up with our (kind of slow) dinghy, we slipped into the ocean — and suddenly they were everywhere.
Curious, fast, completely wild.
